W o r c e s t e r 3 0 0 : C i t y o f I n n o v a t o r s 105 Investing in Health As a not-for-profit hospital system with deep roots in Worcester and the region, we care deeply about discovering, supporting and implementing innovative approaches to improving health in the community. For decades, our hospitals' Community Benefits programs have worked with local health organizations to support initiatives that address health needs and disparities. Programs include: • Mobile medical and preventive dental services in neighborhoods and schools • Food insecurity screening and access to healthy eating resources • Youth development and violence prevention • Mental and behavioral health programming • COVID-19 neighborhood-based free testing and vaccinations for vulnerable populations And in 2018, UMass Memorial adopted our Anchor Mission: a commitment to consciously apply our economic power, as well as our human and intellectual resources, to level pervasive inequities and strengthen the health and economic well-being of communities in Central Massachusetts. is work focuses on: • Investing: We are deploying $4 million of the UMass Memorial Health investment portfolio to local projects that improve the welfare of our community. • Hiring: We hire from our communities, helping transform lives, neighborhoods and ensure our employee profile is reflective of our community. • Purchasing: We support local businesses by buying locally whenever possible, with a focus on those owned by minorities, women and other groups. • Volunteering: Our employees volunteer with local non-profit organizations to support the rich fabric of social service and community development organizations in Central Massachusetts. n Largest Employer and Innovator in the Region At UMass Memorial Health, we are the largest employer in the region and believe in the power of our people. Since 2013, our health system has implemented more than 100,000 ideas from our caregivers. Innovation is part of our DNA. It's how we look at problems and how we solve them. Our focus on continuous improvement is how we strive to always do better, for our patients and clients, our community and our workplace. e diversity of our caregivers and their expertise fuels this innovation. Our new employees all participate in Lean training to learn skills to streamline processes and measure improvements. is includes contributing ideas in staff huddles to improve the care we provide and the ways we work together. We've launched an online platform to keep our remote and on-site caregivers connected as they solve problems and to track and share ideas. In addition to celebrating innovative solutions, we believe in acknowledging the people behind the ideas through a range of recognition programs.
