Mary M. Hooker Environmental
Sciences Magnet School
PDS Construction was Construction Manager at Risk
behind Connecticut's rst LEED Platinum School, renovated
in 2010: the Mary M. Hooker Environmental Sciences
Magnet School in Hartford. All materials came from no
further than 500 miles away to reduce the impact of the
project's carbon footprint. All work — ooring, doors,
door frames, suspended ceilings, drywall, structural steel,
masonry, utilities, windows, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC
and electrical — was completed at 3% under budget.
e goal of the 100,000-square-
foot renovation and addition? To give
K-8 students a living laboratory where
they can interact with all aspects of
environmental science. Project features
include a buttery vivarium; an aquatics
lab with 50 freshwater and saltwater
aquariums; an interactive science theater/
planetarium; and a 30-foot high, glass-
enclosed lobby with a functioning
ecosystem of plants and sh.
