With a background in ar- chitectural engineering and hands-on experience in construction management, she enjoys being part of the process that transforms ideas into real structures. Her accounting expertise provides her with a clear under- standing of how every detail influences a project's success. Marlena is passionate about learning, teamwork, and con- tributing to projects that create lasting impacts on both the people involved and the communities they serve. She currently focuses primarily on accounting functions while using her free time to learn and transition into more on- site roles. Through this experience, she has developed a deep appreciation for how every role—whether in the office or out in the field—plays a vital part in bringing a project to life. What inspired you to pursue a career in construction, and how did you get started? My interest in construction began as a teen when I had the opportunity to be involved in a residential construction project. I helped add special features on the blueprints and was on site daily, that gave me an early glimpse into how all the moving parts of a project come together. That hands- on experience sparked something in me, I loved seeing ideas on paper turn into something real. Studying architec- ture deepened that interest and inspired me to pursue a career creating meaningful, lasting structures. I began from the very bottom and moved my way forward while learning and expressing my interests in becoming more involved. What challenges have you faced as a woman in the con- struction industry, and how have you overcome them? Earning credibility in a male-dominated field was chal- lenging, it sometimes felt like I had to work twice as hard to be taken seriously or have my ideas heard. Instead of letting that discourage me, I used it as motivation to keep learning and expanding my skills. I overcame it by staying cu- rious, expanding my skills, and letting my work speak for itself. Confidence, persistence, and supportive mentors helped me find my voice. I've also been fortunate to work with supportive mentors and colleagues who value teamwork and recognize dedication, regardless of gender. What advice would you give to young women considering a career in construction? Believe in your abilities and don't be afraid to speak up or ask questions. Every project is a chance to learn something new. Stay curious, be confident, and surround yourself with people who support your growth, you belong in every room you step into.
