Celebrating 50 Years
towns, including Holden and
Spencer/East Brookfield. In 1994,
the firm designed the Floral Street
School, its first school project in
Shrewsbury. At this same time,
LPA|A provided Shrewsbury with a
K-12 district-wide Feasibility Study.
This 20-year plan has informed the
building priorities of the town ever
since and resulted in the design of
the new high school, a new middle
school, renovations to another
middle school, and the Major Howard
W. Beal Elementary School, now
under construction.
Culture and Community
In addition to its academic
accomplishments, the firm
completed several projects in other
sectors. In 1990, LPA|A undertook a
major restoration of Washburn Hall
at Mechanics Hall. Adhering to its
commitment to historic preservation,
the firm maintained the original
design elements of this local cultural
treasure, which was dedicated in
1857, while providing important and
necessary updates. Mechanics Hall
was named to the National Register
of Historic Places in 1973.
Community
Involvement
To promote volunteerism, LPA|A
currently allows staff members
two paid days off to support an
organization of their choice.
The result has been widespread
engagement with a variety of non-
profit organizations. Some staff
members serve on local boards
of directors and/or planning and
search committees; others offer
various advising services.
A number of staff members have
volunteered with Worcester's
Upward Bound's summer
program, giving feedback to
Worcester Public High School
students on their final group
architectural projects.
