What's changed: We have scaled the company, purchased new equip- ment, hired new employees and grown our sales throughout the Northeast. What's ahead: We look forward to serving more bakeries, breweries and chefs on the coming years. New prod- ucts like pearled farro, sprouted wheat and ancient grains are helping us to serve more customers and expand the pool of organic growers that we support through our grain purchases. Advice: Cultivate good habits in working through problems. Sometimes you will discover that they are opportunities in disguise. 2014 F O C U S S o u t h e r n M a i n e mainebiz.biz / printsub / printsub / S U B S C R I B E S e e w h o ' S n e x t o n pa g e 4 6 » Michael Dubyak, former president/ CEO of WEX Inc., tops a list of Maine's highest-paid executives in 2013. We have female leaders in Congress, the U.S. Senate, executive suites in public companies and board rooms, but also manufacturing sites, healthcare companies and in the farm-to-table supply chain. Yet the journey continues. Now in its sixth year, the Mainebiz Women to Watch award started in response to the lack of women on the cover of our own publication, as well as to growing evidence that women were, in fact, assuming more control of executive suites and Senate chambers and small businesses. is year we were pleased to see nominations from across the state and across industry lines. e women profiled in this issue are just a fraction of the women in leadership positions around the state. ey represent the fields of architecture, manufacturing, staffing, entertain- ment and agriculture. ey're women that have faced challenges, personally and professionally, and found ways to get things done. ey're resourceful, creative, resilient, independent minded, hardworking, thoughtful and smart. And we're proud to present them as our 2014 Women to Watch. p h o t o S / t o p r i g h t : a M B e r w at e r M a n ; o t h e r S : t i M g r e e n way T H E L I S T August 11, 2014 Vo L . x x n o. x V i www.mainebiz.biz F I L E P H O T O / T I M G R E E N WAY Margo Walsh Owner / MaineWorks What the company does: Employment company with a social mission What's changed: Since 201, Maine- Works has doubled in size, we now employ up to 0 in the busy season and we have established our own property services division. F I L E P H O T O / T I M G R E E N WAY Ellen Belknap President / SMRT Architects & Engineers What's changed: Since 201, I've increased my commitment to trans- parency and to ensuring that SMRT's culture is one of "smarter together." As our practice grows, I strive to make our business transparent to all employees through a variety of ini- tiatives: everyone is regularly briefed on our company fi nancials, successes and challenges, as well as what's happening in HR, fi nance and marketing. We've developed and imple- mented an intensive training program for emerging leaders to foster the skills and mindsets needed to ensure SMRT's continued growth in alignment with our core values. I'm encouraging all employees to think about their personal growth and career path under the banner, "Own your career and live it here." What's ahead: e challenge of identifying and pursuing the next "radical idea" that will allow SMRT to continue to position our clients for success in our rapidly changing industry. I'm very excited about the talent we've recently attracted to SMRT. Since 201 we've grown tremendously, particularly our Massachusetts offi ce. We will continue to expand our geographic reach, working across the country, as our subject matter experts in designing complex 2/7 facilities are in great demand. Our clients' businesses — in health care, science/technol- ogy/industry, education, government and justice — are experiencing unprecedented change. How SMRT remains a trusted advisor to our clients by providing value beyond the traditional roles of architect or engineer keeps me energized. Advice: Be curious, be generous and help each other.
