158 HEART OF THE COMMONWEALTH: Profiles of Excellence A s the parent company of the Worcester Business Journal, New England Business Media LLC (NEBM) has been producing award-winning publications since 1990. A diversified publishing operation, NEBM's group of regional business publications also includes Mainebiz, a statewide business publication with operations out of Portland, Maine, and the Hartford Business Journal, which covers central Connecticut. Along with our Custom Publishing and Book divisions, the company produces a diverse portfolio of products and services, including the book you're holding in your hands! In 2007, Worcester Business Journal publisher Peter Stanton and Hartford Business Journal publisher Joseph Zwiebel purchased the business publication division of Worcester Publishing Ltd., which included Worcester Business Journal, Mainebiz and the Hartford Business Journal. Since that time, the company has launched a Custom Publishing Division, a new regional publication in the MetroWest area – Metrowest495BIZ, and has expanded its electronic offerings, tripling the number of subscribers to the daily business news emails and re- launching dynamic new websites in each market. Despite a difficult economy, the 55-person company has seen growth in each of the last three years as it continues to expand its brand, reach and publishing capabilities. While its digital offerings continue to be an area of significant growth, the largest area of expansion has actually been on the events side of the business. NEBM owns and operates the premiere B2B shows in Connecticut and Maine. In addition, each business publication produces between 10 and 14 events a year, from Forty Under 40, an annual celebration of young leaders, to the Mass Energy Summit, our popular Family Business Awards, Outstanding Women in Business and many more – the Worcester Business Journal team has built a reputation for first-class programs. First published in 1990 as the successor to the former Business Worcester, the bi-weekly Worcester Business Journal, at its core, is known for its brand of strong, independent journalism and superb design. Not surprisingly, the last decade has seen the business evolve from a print periodical into a true multimedia operation. Reader enthusiasm for the WBJ Daily Report is tangible: It's a quick, easy-to-read email that highlights the top regional business stories of the day that keeps readers in the know, consuming timely news that they don't have to wait for the next day's daily newspaper to read. Regular website updates, video interviews and event recaps, along with key data from our annual Book of Lists and Central Mass by the Numbers, all available online, have helped build the WBJ brand as the leader when it comes to business news, information and analysis in the Central Massachusetts region. e company's Custom Publishing Division has also expanded its services over the last few years. e Custom division produces commemorative anniversary publications, show guides and directories, annual newsletter/promotional publications. Supporting these special publications with a mix of advertising from vendors and supporters reduces direct costs and brings a custom publication within the range of many corporate and small business budgets. U.S. exports to the country of 1.3 billion are up 97% over the last five years, reflecting the increasing popularity of Western goods among China's booming middle class, whose annual income has multiplied tenfold since 1980. In Maine, $275 million worth of exports were shipped to China in 2011. "Everything I experienced exceeded my expectations," says Kevin Khovaneth, a techni- cal relationship manager with Artel.
