The company said its High- Performance Refractories business acquired Spin-Works International Corp., which makes 3D-printed and extruded silicon carbide ceramic com- ponents to improve energy efficiency, recover waste heat and reduce emissions for a vast range of high-temperature industrial functions. Worcester eyeing 15 marijuana stores, local tax The Worcester Economic Development Committee has endorsed city regulations to limit the number of retail marijuana shops in the city to 15 and adopt a 3-percent sales tax. The proposed set of rules mirror recommen- dations made by City Manager Edward Augustus in October. The state law creating the recreational use and sale of cannabis allows for the adoption of a local 3-percent sales tax in addition to a combined 17-percent state sales and excise tax. The two companies signed the agreement the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The planned acquisition was first reported by Worcester Business Journal in April. Reliant Medical Group physi- cians approved the move in May, in which 230 physician members voted. Reliant trustees approved it in April. Optum is headquartered in Minnesota and is a division of $185-billion managed care conglomerate UnitedHealth Group. Fallon Health names new CFO Worcester health- care insurer and provider Fallon Health named a new chief financial offi- cer with more than 20 years of experi- ence in the health insurance industry.
