Earlier this year, Saint Francis unveiled a $3-million transformation of its 20-room oncology pavilion on the hospital's eighth floor. Krapek also points to the individual acts that the foundation supports. He recalls the story of a cancer patient who did not have a proper bed at home, and was sleeping on his basement floor. When colleagues at Saint Francis learned this they reached out to the foundation, which bought the man a bed so he could heal properly. "Our hospital is committed to helping the community around it; giving free services to those who cannot afford it, spending our resources in the community, and especially offering spiritual healing," says Krapek. "We need to always reach out to the community to determine the health needs." "It is due to the dedication and generosity of our many benefactors that Saint Francis has been able to play a vital role in providing the very best care possible to our community," said hospital President Dr. John F. Rodis. "We are deeply grateful for their support of our ability to invest wisely, carefully balancing our financial resources with local demands and expectations to create a people-centered environment." Determining each hospital's needs is a challenging process, according to Giorgio, one that requires open and constant communication between the hospital president, the leadership team and the development office team. In addition to the stewardship efforts of the foundation, the auxiliary at Saint Francis also supports the hospital by providing services that complement patient care and funding for its various needs, while fostering interest throughout the community for the hospital's continued growth. Nearly every part of Saint Francis has been touched by the fundraising efforts of the auxiliary. To date, the auxiliary has donated more than $15 million to the hospital including $1.5 million to the Comprehensive Women's Health Center; $1.5 million to New Beginnings Family Birth Care Center to complete the renovation of 23 post-partum suites; and $1.5 million to the Hope & Healing Campaign. Currently, the auxiliary is working on fulfilling a $5-million pledge for other projects across the hospital. "As an anchor institution in the greater Hartford area, we must build trusting relationships with our community; being good stewards of our resources builds a foundation of trust," says Rossini, the foundation chief development officer. "Treating our donors as partners in the work we do, and demonstrating how their gifts make a difference, help to build trusting, long-term relationships with contributors who have entrusted us with their gifts." ● The oncology unit at Saint Francis was the beneficiary of a $3-million renovation, which reflects the importance of spaces as places where healing can begin.
