4 S T U F F • 2 0 1 7 WELCOME T he manufacturing industry is alive and well in Massachusetts, especially in Worcester County, and the proof is here to see. Advanced manufacturing is a high-pay- ing, technology-centric sector where the median pay runs between $70,000 and $80,000 a year in Mas- sachusetts, with many higher level positions making in excess of $100K. While entry level jobs pay less, companies offer the potential for employees to ad- vance up the ladder, receive training to advance their career, and strong benefits packages. So why aren't more young people getting into man- ufacturing? The simple answer is they don't know enough about the opportunities, and the industry as a whole has done a poor job promoting itself. Manufac- turers are located largely in industrial parks, not on Main Street, and unless you know someone working there you are unlikely to have any idea about who they area and their career opportunities. In this issue you'll learn about the industry its workforce and its products; find sponsor profiles from 19 of the area's top companies; and get some advice on pursuing a future in the exciting field of manu- facturing, with positions ranging from production to engineering, sales, marketing, human resources or IT. Manufacturing represents one of the major em- ployment sectors in the state. While there are more than 250,000 manufacturing jobs in Massachusetts, it is projected in the next 10 years more than 100,000 of those employees will leave the workforce. That spells a major opportunity for those considering a career in the industry. Our high schools and colleges are working with the manufacturing community to help prepare the next generation. Whether you're a student looking to develop a career or a business leader wanting to learn more about local manufacturing, this issue should serve you well. A special thanks to all the manufacturers and others who supported STUFF 2017. Connecting manufacturers with tomorrow's work- force and supporting those who make our regional economy strong remains our mission. Let us know how we're doing!
