The FDA initiated inspec- tions at 17 U.S. hospitals, including Brigham & Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, which were also cited for infractions. In its report released in October, the FDA citations against UMass Memorial included failure to report patient infec- tions possibly associated with a duode- noscope, which goes into the small intestine. According to the FDA, three of those patients later died, but two had compli- cated illnesses. According to UMass Memorial, 14 patients developed infections. The hos- pital couldn't definitively link the duo- denoscope to the infections, even after an investigation, said hospital spokes- man Anthony Berry. The hospital notified the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the manufacturer, but didn't think it had to tell the FDA because there wasn't a definitive link to the device, said Berry. Wachusett Mountain's $2M snowmaking expansion ready to run Wachusett Mountain Ski Area in Princeton celebrated the grand opening of its new pumping station that is part of a $2 million snowmaking expansion before Thanksgiving. The expansion included construction of a new snowmaking pump house and installation of new computer-controlled technology on the mountain's signature "Ralph's Run" trail, according to a release from the mountain, which is located 30 minutes from Worcester. The project included: Doubling the mountain's pumping capacity from 4,000 to 8,000 gallons per minute – meaning snowmaking crews can cover two trails overnight with a foot of snow on each. Increasing energy efficiency, allowing more snow to be made overnight when temperatures are colder, rather than making snow while guests are skiing. Add over 40 Computer Controlled HKD Tower Guns on Ralph's Run that will monitor temperature and humidity, making adjustments automatically to increase output and improve quality.
