"As an organization, we have developed a culture t h a t a ck n o w l e d g e s the importance of our employees," said Chief Employee Experience Offi cer Lannie Moffatt. "They are–and will remain–a focal point for years to come. Their satisfaction correlates to their engagement in company initiatives and, in turn, to the experience they provide our customers." A top program is the Living Wage Initiative. BSB was the first Maine-based financial institution to implement a living wage initiative for all employees. It currently ensures that no employee—full-time, part-time, exempt or non-exempt—earns less than $13 per hour and the company is increasing minimum pay incrementally to $14 per hour by 2018. Additionally, in recognition of unforeseen financial needs, and to help alleviate anxiety, BSB established an internally funded and confi dential Employee Relief Fund and no- interest loans for larger expenses like heating oil and home computers. A robust tuition pre-reimbursement program provides up- front dollars toward any degree, as well as internal training and career path programs. BSB maintains educational partnerships with UNE and Husson University, offering a certificate program in business leadership and a master's degree in business administration. This year, BSB boosted its focus on wellness through onsite chair massages, workplace fitness challenges, and stress-reduction educational workshops. To increase physical activity, BSB provided free Fitbit trackers to all employees and launched bank-wide activity challenges for friendly competition. "Our focus is not limited to an employee's work life," said Moffatt. "We are committed to supporting the whole employee—at work, at home, through support of their community interests and causes, and through our continual investment in them." To ensure employees know how valuable they are, BSB shares customer feedback regularly, through i n t r a n e t , e m a i l , p e r s o n a l i z e d t h a n k - y o u n o t e s, e t c . T h i s acknowledges the contributions employees make toward customer experiences each day. Other programs include Annual Pizza Night for employee recognition, and community service focuses like the employee- generated Military Appreciation group. "Overall, our programs are designed to meet the needs of our employees and maintain their engagement," said Moffatt. "Almost none of our employee-focused programs were management-driven. While leadership may be ultimately responsible for the company-wide implementation of programs or initiatives, the ideas come through conversations with employees."
