Employees report they never feel as though they are just another person or num- ber. The CEO and man- agement know pretty much everyone by fi rst name, from nurses to housekeepers. "We call it our Redington family here, because of the strong professional and posi- t i v e r e l a t i o n s h i p s we've built, lending an atmosphere of team- work, hard work and positive attitudes," said CEO Dick Willett. "We have an open-door policy where we wel- come any employee to come in and chat. This friendly atmosphere makes for employees who feel listened to and satisfi ed. Employees are encouraged to join committees and are often called upon for input in decision-making." Then there's the satisfaction of their work. For example, this year, one nurse, Kelly Hughes Wheeler, was named Maine Hospital Association Caregiver of the Year. As nurse manager of the Birthing Center, W h e e l e r e p i t o - mizes the RFGH spirit. " Pa t i e n t s a l - ways right my s h i p," W h e e l e r said. "Whenever I have a bad day or question whether I'm making a dif- ference, there's always a patient around the corner who makes me realize why I do what I do." Those are the values at RFGH. And it's people like Wheeler who make RFGH a wonderful place to work. Recently, RFGH celebrated its 47th year with its annual barbecue, in- viting employees, volunteers, clergy, board members, retirees and fam- ily members for a Jimmy Buffett/ Margaritaville theme, with tropical decorations, gifts for everyone, live music, plenty of tasty food, Giffords Ice Cream, and virgin daiquiris and piña coladas. That's the kind of fun and appreciation RFGH employees get to enjoy every year. (Every fi fth year, it's a lobster bake.) Other great programs include annu- al employee recognition/satisfaction events—Hospital Week with games and prizes, holiday dance parties, employee/volunteer recognition ban- quets, ice cream socials, ugly sweater contests and more. There's a great fi t- ness center, and professional growth opportunities at no cost, as well as tuition assistance and advanced cer- tifi cation courses. And a defi ned ben- efi t pension plan and matching 403(b) contribution sets up employees to feel fi nancially secure once they retire. "These all lead to happier and healthier employees," said Willett. "Employees feel appreciated because of all the great benefi ts the organiza- tion provides to them. Our employees take care of the community and thus this organization. We should take care of them."
