The clinical- stage biopharmaceutical company that develops therapeutics for the treatment of viral infections has consulted with Dr. Afdhal since 2011. In his new role, he will help lead the next stage of the company's clinical development strategy, Martin Driscoll, president and CEO of Spring Bank, said in a statement. The company's most advanced product candidate is a substance that could be used to fight viral infections such as HBV, HCV and RSV. ROBERT BRANDNER was hired as chief information officer at Worcester-based Spectrum Health Systems, a newly created position. He was previously employed by Dell Computers, working in IT enterprise architecture. Brandner has a bachelor's degree in political science from Keene State College in Keene, N.H. DR. TAMMY VARGAS, a Sturbridge resident and board-certified family medicine physician, has joined Harrington Physician Services in Charlton. Vargas sees patients at the 10 N. Main St. medical office building. DAVID FELPER was named chairman of the board of Spectrum Health Systems of Worcester. Felper is a partner with Worcester law firm Bowditch & Dewey. DR. ALISON MADDEN joined the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Worcester's Reliant Medical Group. She will see patients at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester. Madden earned her medical degree from Cornell University in New York City. She then completed a residency at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, followed by a residency in obstetrics and gynecology and a fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. DR. THOMAS JOHNSON and DR. THOMAS CANTO, board-certified general surgeons, have joined Harrington Physician Services Surgical Department, an affiliate of Harrington HealthCare System. Both will practice in the Harrington Physician Services office at the Medical Arts Building on the Harrington Hospital campus in Southbridge. Johnson was formerly employed by Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer, with more than 20 years of experience in general surgery. He has a doctorate from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Canto also worked at Baystate Wing Hospital, with 28 years of experience in general surgery. His doctorate is from Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. He has also worked at Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer. SHILPA MONGA and LOURDES UY have joined Harrington Physician Services at a new women's health clinic at 61 N. Main Street in Charlton. Dr. Monga is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. She comes to Harrington from Riverbend Medical Group in Chicopee, Mass. She graduated from the University of Delhi in India. Dr. Monga completed her research at Columbia University and her residency at Cornell University. Dr. Uy recently completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at University of Massachusetts Medical School, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Uy received her medical degree from Manila Central University in the Philippines. JODY-LYNN SIMONIAN was hired to lead occupational health services at AFC Doctors Express Urgent Care's MetroWest clinics. The company, based in Marlborough, handles drug screenings, vaccines, and pulmonary and respiratory fit tests. A resident of Auburn, Simonian has more than 30 years of client relationship management experience. JOYCE A. MURPHY was appointed to serve on the Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare Board of Directors, a national nonprofit. She is executive vice chancellor of UMass Medical School's Commonwealth Medicine division, in Worcester. Murphy assumed the senior-most executive role at Commonwealth Medicine in 2011, five years after joining UMass Medical School and holding the position of Commonwealth Medicine's vice chancellor and chief operating officer. DR. DENEENE DOYKER- BOOTH, a board- certified pain management physician and anesthesiologist, has joined Southbridge- based Harrington HealthCare System's Pain Management Department. Doyker-Booth will join Dr. Kate Mason at the Pain Center's new location at 94 South Street in Southbridge, to treat patients dealing with chronic pain issues. Doyker- Booth joins Harrington from Hartford Hospital's Pain Treatment Center and The Spine and Pain Institute, where she worked as an Interventional Pain Management Specialist. She graduated with her medical degree from University of Connecticut and completed her fellowship at Tufts University School of Medicine. DR. PHILLIP LAHEY IV has joined the clinical team at Holden Rehabilitation & Skilled Nursing Center, as specialty medical director of the orthopedics program. He was formerly with Worcester County Orthopedics. Lahey is also a team physician for the College of the Holy Cross Athletics in Worcester. DR. MATILDE "MATTIE" CASTIEL was named the new commissioner of Health and Human Services for the City of Worcester. She is board-certified in internal medicine and has been medical director to a large municipal emergency management system, an emergency room attending physician, primary care physician, urgent care physician and physician to an elderly outreach program. Castiel was most recently the founder, executive director and medical director of Latin American Health Alliance, a collaboration dedicated to combating homelessness and drug addiction. She is also the founder of the Hector Reyes House and Casa Reyes, a substance abuse treatment facility and transitional house for Hispanic males in Worcester. In 2014, Castiel opened Café Reyes, an innovative jobs training program in which residents at Hector Reyes House and Casa Reyes run a Shrewsbury Street restaurant. She has a bachelor's degree in cellular and molecular biology from Cal State-Northridge, in California She earned her medical degree from the University of California-San Francisco. The advisory board of Devereux, a private special needs school, foster care provider, and residential treatment agency in Rutland, elected five new members at its annual meeting.
