20 ConneCTiCuT Green Guide • Fall 2014 www.CTGreenGuide.com with the PW1100G-JM engine for the Airbus A320neo aircraft in mid-2015. Thus far, Pratt has more than 6,000 engines on order. "It's the culmination of 20 years of research, over $1 billion of development and investment, and thousands of hours of testing and fly tests," said Smith. "I've got to tell you, I'm an EHS guy, but I'm just as excited as the engineers that actually designed the product." While the PurePower engines align with Pratt's 2025 goals in pioneering a new level of fuel efficiency for the market, Pratt recognizes the need to expand its focus to include suppliers and community outreach in its overall goals. Andre de Fontaine has worked with UTC and Pratt since 2005 in his role at the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office. He has seen UTC break records in the past, such as reducing its energy consump- tion by 32 percent between 2005 and 2012 through the DOE's Better Plants challenge, surpassing its initial goal to reach 25 percent in 10 years. However, de Fontaine sees the company's effort to extend such aggressive initiatives to its suppliers as the true sign of a market leader. "UTC and Pratt have made a lot of progress reducing the efficiency of their own companies, but to have an even bigger impact they have enrolled a group of their suppliers into our Better Plants Program," de Fontaine said. "That willingness to share what they've learned is what separates them from everybody else." In July, DOE announced seven UTC suppliers had joined the initiative, including Firth Rixson of East Hart- Pratt 2025 Goals Waste: Factories will have zero waste — 100 percent will be recycled. energy: Energy use will be optimized; will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent.
