www.CTGreenGuide.com Fall 2014 • Connecticut Green Guide 19 The 2025 Sustainability Goals — named to coin- cide with the company's centennial — address waste, energy, water, safety and wellness, materials, suppliers, and products and set aggressive targets for Pratt's future consumption, such as reducing greenhouse gas emis- sions by 80 percent. "When we looked at these goals, we understood that they were ambitious to say the least," said Dave Smith, director of global environmental health & safety (EHS) for the company. While plenty of Connecticut companies make green products and seek efficiencies in their operations, Pratt — along with its parent United Technologies of Hartford — is perhaps the largest example of a major corpora- tion that has shifted its product focus to environmental sustainability while at the same time making all its process as efficient as possible. Both efforts help the company grow revenues and cut expenses. Since 2000, Pratt has invested $80 million across 1,000 projects in order to improve sustainability at its facilities. In the 2025 goals, Pratt aims to have the most fuel efficient and quietest engines on the market, and the PurePower line with its geared turbo fan technology is the first step toward achieving such a feat. Compared to other modern engines, the five PurePower products reduce fuel burn by 16 percent, cut carbon emissions by 3,000 metric tons per aircraft per year, and reduce noise footprint by 50 to 75 percent. The engines in the line, which were individually launched between 2007 and 2010, are scheduled to en- ter into service within the next four years, starting The PurePower engine family pW1100G for airbus a320neo Launched: 2010 In the air: mid-2015 pW1500G for bombardier CSeries Launched: 2007 In the air: late 2015 pW1200G for mitsubishi regional Jet Launched: 2007 In the air: 2017 pW1400G for irkut mC-21 Launched: 2008 In the air: 2017 pW1700G and pW1900G for Launched: 2013 embraer Second Generation e-Jets In the air: 2018 Pratt first started developing the PurePower concepts a generation ago, as the lead time to bring a new product online in aerospace is very lengthy. phoTo | CoNTRiBUTED
