Company evolution Times Mirror purchased the Courant, which had been employee-owned, in 1979. Times Mirror merged with the Tribune Company in 2000. FOX CT began in 1984 as a locally-owned, general entertainment station in competition with WCCT's predecessor, WTXX. Known as WTIC-TV at the time, the station became a charter Fox affiliate in 1986, while WCCT is affiliated with the CW Television Network. Over the years, FOX TV had several owners until it was sold to the Tribune Company, which subse- quently purchased WTXX. Both stations became sister properties to the Courant in the Times Mirror and Tribune merger in 2000. Fox TV's 10 o'clock newscast made its debut in 1989; weeknight 11 p.m. and weekday morning news- casts were added in 2008. Shortly after broadcasting its newscasts in high definition, the station added weekend morning and 4 p.m. newscasts, increasing the station's weekly local news output to the most of any station in the Hartford/New Haven market.
