"Jefferson would ultimately claim the libel cases were filed without his knowl- edge, but there is no doubt that, by 1806, he was sick of Connecticut and sick of newspapers like The Courant," the Courant reported in 1998. The libel charges were dropped in 1809. Mark Twain, who was one of Hartford's "literate gentlemen" along with Courant Publisher Charles Dudley Warner, tried to buy stock in the paper but his offer was rejected. "Twain had tried to buy into The Courant in 1869, before coming to Hartford," John Bard McNulty wrote in his book, "Older Than the Nation: The Story of The Hartford Courant." The Courant's owner at the time, Joseph Roswell Hawley, and Warner gave the proposal careful consideration but for some unknown reason turned it down. "Twain evidently regarded the refusal to sell a share of the newspaper as a personal rebuff, and for a while after coming to Hartford he treated Warner rather cooly. But it was hard to know Warner and not to like him. The two were soon collaborating on their novel, ["The Gilded Age"], and before long Warner was Cousin Charley to Twain's children," McNulty wrote. Today the Courant is known for its exclusive investi- gative reporting on politics and government account- ability as well as its sports coverage. The Courant is the go-to source for the latest on UConn and high school athletic scores, schedules and news. Although they are independent news operations, the Courant and FOX CT have access to combined resources — resulting in the ability to provide greater coverage of the local com- munity and celebration of its diversity for readers and viewers alike. The newspaper was honored with its first Pulitzer Prize in 1992 for its investigative reporting into the problems with the Hubble Space Telescope. In 1999 the paper won another Pulitzer in the Breaking News category for coverage of a multiple murder-suicide at Connecticut Lottery headquarters. FOX CT is the leading local news gathering operation in the state, providing 46.5 hours of local news each week to viewers in the Hartford/New Haven market, more than any other station in the state. The station is known for its local news and event coverage, from New Haven's St. Patrick's Day Parade to the Hartford Marathon and the annual Thanksgiving Day Manchester Road Race. CT1 Media also consists of New Mass. Media, the publisher of the Above: The Hartford Courant iPad app puts the news at your fingertips.
