COGNEX WINS PATENT CASE Cognex Corp. of Natick said a federal jury has ruled in the company's favor in a patent infringe- ment lawsuit it brought against a Washington state firm last year. The suit against Microscan Systems Inc., of Renton, Wash., and its development and manufacturing partner, The Code Corp., alleged that Microscan's Mobile Hawk handheld code reader infringed on a Cognex patent. The jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York agreed, Cognex said, and awarded the company an undisclosed amount of lost profits. RXi DRUG PASSES ANOTHER MILESTONE Marlborough-based RXi Pharmaceuticals Corp. announced what it called successful results of initial testing of its anti-dermal scarring drug, RXI-109, in monkeys, as part of a dose-range finding study to build the company's ophthalmology business. RXI- 109 targets connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), a gene that can reduce or inhibit post-surgical scar formation. President and CEO Geert Cauwenbergh said in a statement: "This finding opens up an avenue to possibly develop topical forms of RXI-109 to com- bat corneal scarring, which often occurs secondary to trauma or infection and can lead to visual impair- ment, including blindness." HARVARD BIOSCIENCE REVENUE FALLS SLIGHTLY Harvard Bioscience said winter weather dragged down first-quarter revenue slightly as the life sci- ences manufacturer brought in $25.9 million, down 0.7 percent from $26.1 million in the first quarter of 2013. The Holliston-based company eked out net profits of $700,000, or 2 cents per share, down slightly from $900,000 (3 cents per share) in the same quarter last year, the company reported. Harvard Bio blamed part of the drop on higher restructuring charges and interest expense. Part of the restructur- ing during the quarter was the filling of several key management positions in the U.S. and China, the company said. REVENUE JUMP FOR HEARTWARE Fueled by sales of it its Ventricular Assist Sys- tems, Framingham-based HeartWare International on announced a 35-percent jump in revenue for the first quarter, from $49.2 million in the first quarter of 2013 to $66.5 million. The company said it saw a 38-percent increase over the first quarter of 2013. HeartWare said its U.S. revenue was $33.8 million, up 29 percent, while revenue from international markets was $32.7 million, a jump of 42 percent. However, operating expenses totaled $60 million, compared with $38.6 million in the first quarter of 2013, some of which the company attributed to the inclusion of a full quarter of expenses from its De- cember 2013 acquisition of CircuLite, the expansion of sales and marketing activities, increased employee expenses and other administrative expenses. BSX LOOKS TO EXPAND JAPANESE MARKET REACH In a move it believes will improve its position in the Japanese drug-eluting stent market, Natick- based Boston Scientific Corp. (BSX) announced the launch of Promus Premier Stent System in the Asian country. Part of the company's drug-eluding stent technology, the system recently received approval from the Japanese government, the company said. The system was developed with input from interven- tional cardiologists and outcomes and is intended to be just one treatment option for coronary artery dis- ease, the company said. The system received approv- als from European authorities and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration last year, the company said. IRON MOUNTAIN'S ASCENT Boston-based Iron Mountain — which has operations in Northborough and Southborough — reported first-quarter revenue of $770 million, up from $747 million in the first quarter of 2013. The company attributed a significant amount of its gains from internal storage revenue internationally, where it has invested heavily over the year. Additionally, the company said gross profits for the quarter were $435 million, a bump of 2.1 percent from the first quarter of 2013, and adjusted earnings per share was 26 cents, down a penny from 2013. BSX EARNINGS BACK ON TRACK Boston Scientific, lifted by growth in cardiac-treat- ment devices, reported a 4-percent jump in opera- tional revenue for the first quarter, along with net profits of $133 million, rebounding from a $454-mil- lion loss in the first quarter of 2013. The Natick- based medical device manufacturer also predicts 3 to 5 percent annual growth in operations for the year, within a range of $7.3 billion to $7.5 billion, Boston Scientific (BSX) said in its quarterly report filed roundup s page 5 Cyprian Keyes Golf Club ...Enjoy the Experience...
