For decades, couples have turned to Sachs to find the perfect en- gagement ring as they begin a new chapter in their love stories. Owner Karl Sachs offered We Do! a behind-the-scenes look at the world of buying rings today. What's the difference between modern ring shoppers com- pared with those a generation or two ago? Ring shoppers today come into the store telling me what they want to buy, knowing what they want because they are hyper-in- formed. Meanwhile, a generation or two ago, people would come in and completely rely on us as experts. Shoppers of today still rely on us, because there's a lot of misinformation out there, but the shop- pers of yesterday wholly relied on our suggestions to guide them. Shoppers today have honed it down to a style, a material, a look, a size, and know their budget beforehand which helps the process be more streamlined. Lab-grown diamonds are increasingly popular. What's your ex- pert opinion on choosing lab-grown rather than earth-mined diamonds? We sell both in our stores. Lab-grown diamonds are popular for two reasons: they're more affordable and they're easier to find a specific size, shape and quality diamond, because they're created. With lab-grown, you can get what you want when you want, and get more for your money. Earth-mined diamonds are much rarer and have significant intrinsic value. They're great for "purists" who want something created from Mother Earth. Aren't lab-grown diamonds better for the environment? In some ways, yes. Many diamond-producing countries have set regulations for the diamond miners that once they exhaust that area, they are required to return the mine back to a state of pre-mining. But people do not realize the magnificent amount of energy that it takes to create a man-made diamond. So, while you are not drilling a hole in the ground, you are using a ton of electri- cal resources. Are there other options you recommend? Not everybody loves a diamond, and there are other gem species that are equally beautiful and durable, like rubies and sapphires. I generally don't recommend emeralds as they're not as durable.
