CT Innovations invests $18M in early-stage companies in latest quarter Connecticut Innovations (CI) announced it invested about $18 million in early-stage companies and fund of funds during the second quarter of its fiscal year, which ended Dec. 31, 2023. CI is the state's quasi-public venture capital investor. Of the total second-quarter investment, CI said it invested $7.5 million in climate tech companies and $5 million in healthcare tech firms. Another $3 million was invested in consumer packaged-goods companies. The other roughly $2.5 million was invested in the technology sector and CI's portfolio of venture funds. CI's largest investments during the quarter were in New York-based Enertiv Inc., an energy data and analytics company; Danbury-based Perosphere Tech Inc., a private medical technologies company; and Savant Systems Inc., a Hyannis, Massachusetts-based technology company. BLS: Worker fatalities in CT increased 47% in one year Thirty-four workers were fatally injured on the job in Connecticut in 2022, up 47% from the 23 fatal injuries that were suffered in 2021, according to a new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report. There were nine fatalities each in the private construction and private transportation and warehousing sectors, up from six and four, respec- tively, in the previous year, according to the report. Five of the nine fatalities in the construction industry were due to falls, slips and trips. Six of the nine fatalities in the transportation and warehousing industry were the result of "transportation incidents." Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers accounted for 10, or nearly a third, of worker fatalities in Connecticut in 2022. Across all industries in Connecticut, transportation incidents were to blame for 12 fatal workplace injuries — 35% of all such deaths in 2022, according to the BLS. Landlord wants to replace Wallingford's Captain Seas restaurant with drive-thru coffee chain 7 Brew A proposal to demolish an aging building and replace it with a growing national drive-thru coffee franchise appears to have scuttled the Captain Seas restaurant in Wallingford. The Wallingford Planning & Zoning Commission is considering a special permit application for the project at 905 North Colony Road (Route 5). The location has been home to the restaurant, known for its seafood, for 15 years. Larry Merriam, manager of Fulton Forbes Inc. in Southport, which owns the property, said that the restaurant's 15-year lease will not be renewed when it expires next month. The property's new tenant, Merriam said, will be 7 Brew, a drive-thru coffee chain that is growing nation- ally. Based in Arkansas, the chain has more than 100 locations in 24 states, but none in New England. Merriam said the existing building on the property is old, in "bad repair" and needs to be demolished. Amid PURA rate dispute, Eversource announces potential sale of water business, Aquarion Eversource Energy announced that it may sell its water distribution business, Bridgeport-based Aquarion Water Co., to "reduce equity needs and improve regulatory diversity." The potential sale comes as Aquarion is in a battle with the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority over a rate increase request. The water company had a $1.3 billion rate base as of Dec. 31, 2023, making it "likely of substantial value to another owner as part of a larger stra- tegic water business or infrastructure platform," according to Eversource. Eversource and PURA have been at odds since last March, when the utilities regulator not only rejected Aquarion's rate increase request, but decreased its annual revenue requirement by $2 million from the current level — about a 1% reduction. Aquarion, which serves 208,000 customers in 59 cities and towns in Connecticut, has appealed PURA's decision in New Britain Superior Court.
