8 Lamoureux Pagano Associates | Architects One of the first hires would become a central figure in the firm. Michael Pagano began his relationship with the firm in 1975 as a junior in college. He applied for an internship at the suggestion of one of his professors; this opportunity would change his professional trajectory. While working on an undergraduate degree in environmental design, a blend of architecture, landscape architecture and city planning, he was gaining real-world experience in and around the city where he had been raised. Pagano was impressed with Lamoureux's commitment to every project, his strong ethics and professional integrity. Pagano accepted a full-time position at the firm and when he passed his certification exams, he proposed a formal partnership with Lamoureux. Embracing the same principles, values and commitment to excellence, the two men joined forces and in 1987 created Lamoureux Pagano Associates. A Turning Point Although the economy was improving at this time, projects were sometimes scarce, so the firm accepted whatever commissions became available. LPA|A tackled a variety of projects from roof and window replacements, small-scale additions and minor renovations to new construction, large complexes, private residences and public facilities. A major turning point occurred in 1983 when the firm was asked to design the Carpenter's Union Training Center in Millbury, a collaborative effort between the Carpenter's Union and the Association of General Contractors. This center trains apprentices and journeymen in residential and commercial carpentry skills and helped boost LPA|A to the next level. As the firm's portfolio grew, so, too, did its reputation. Businesses with whom the firm had worked often returned with new projects. For instance, in addition to the Spencer Police Station in 1984, Elderly Housing renovations for the Town of Spencer in 1985 and the West Main School renovations in 1987, the firm was hired in 1988 to design the town's Knox Trail Jr. High School. By prioritizing high standards, unique sustainable designs and 1980s: Managing Growth At the beginning of the decade, the country was emerging from its second recession and work became more plentiful. Lamoureux continued to operate with a small core staff, but needed to bring on more employees to accommodate the increase in business and the growing diversity of its clients.
