Celebrating 50 Years
Community
Involvement
In working with the Worcester
Public Schools so closely, staff
members developed a deep
understanding of the community
and the sometimes unmet needs
of local students. The firm decided
to spearhead a fundraising
effort for Recreation Worcester,
a program that provides year-
round, after-school programs for
students.
In 2018 LPA|A teamed up with
their partners on the Nelson
Place Elementary School
Project to help raise $30,000
for the program. Staff have also
volunteered directly with students
for their after-school program,
exposing elementary students to
architectural concepts.

Ashburnham Elementary School
town grows. The 32,000 square
foot addition and 6,000 square foot
renovation features a learning center
for technology, public computer
stations, group study and community
meeting rooms, a common area,
climate-controlled history room, and
creative outdoor children's area.
The firm designed another key
project in 2016 in nearby West
Boylston. The College of the Holy
Cross sought to create a space
for contemplation, prayer and
reflection in a suitable location. A
52-acre parcel in West Boylston with
breathtaking views of Wachusett
Reservoir and rural landscape proved
to be the ideal site. In collaboration
with William J. Masiello Architects,
Inc., LPA|A designed the 34,000
square foot Joyce Contemplative
Center where Holy Cross faculty,
staff and students are invited to
partake in spiritual retreats.
The Center includes an 1,800
square foot chapel, meeting rooms,
a dining room and single and shared
bedrooms for 60 people. The firm
adopted an unassuming design style
that accentuates the rural setting
and dramatic views. The choice of
hardwood and stone reflects the
simplicity of the Center and the
natural beauty of the surroundings. n
