The Downs adds a Costco, Maine's first Just in time for holiday shop- ping season, Maine's first Costco warehouse store opened on Nov. 17. e 161,000-square-foot location is at 455 Downs Road, Scarborough, within the growing Downs mixed- use development. It is expected to have 225 employees. Costco Wholesale Corp. (Nasdaq: COST) operates 867 warehouse, member- ship-only stores worldwide, 596 of which are in the U.S. includ- ing 16 in New England. Before the opening, Maine was one of only four U.S. states without a Costco, including Rhode Island, West Virginia and Wyoming. According to the National Retail Federation, Costco ranks No. 3 among the largest U.S. retailers, behind Walmart and Amazon. e chain, based in Issaquah, Wash., carries clothing, toys, electronics, furni- ture, appliances, yard equipment and other household goods, while also selling groceries in bulk sizes at discount prices. N O T E W O R T H Y S O U T H E R N The University of Southern Maine Foundation in Portland received a $25,000 sponsorship from NBT Bank in Portland supporting the university's newly opened McGoldrick Center for Career & Student Success. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that it awarded a $2 million grant to ecomaine in Portland through its Recycling Education and Outreach grants pro- gram for a project called "An Effort to Increase Maine's Recycling Rate Through Outreach to Stakeholders of Multi-Family Dwelling Units." Southern Maine Community College in South Portland and the University of Maine at Farmington announced the signing of 15 new articulation agreements that allow college stu- dents to seamlessly transfer to pro- grams at the university to continue their educational journey. Northern Light Mercy Hospital in Portland said that it has become a member of the Dana-Farber Cancer Care Collaborative. As a collaborative member, the hospital has access to virtual consults and second opinions, support and education for physicians and nurses and streamlined access to Dana-Farber specialists in Boston for patients with complex cancers. U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree announced that the city of Freeport was awarded a grant of $7.5 million and a loan of $7.488 million through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development's Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program to make replacements and upgrades to the city's wastewater treatment plant and collection system. Partners for World Health in Portland received a two-year, $300,000 grant from the Fagus Foundation to be used for container subsidies and for bio- medical equipment purchases. The Maine Coast Fishermen's Association in Brunswick said its Fishermen Feeding Mainers program has served more than 1 million meals to families facing food insecu- rity in communities throughout Maine since its inception in October 2020. The association also said that $2.2 million has been infused back into the Maine economy through the pro- gram to date. Foundation raises $1.8M for Lewiston recovery In the wake of the Oct. 25 mass shooting in Lewiston, the Maine Community Foundation said it has raised $1.8 million so far to support recovery efforts. e total includes more than $1.3 million specifically designated by donors to the victims-and-families por- tion of the fund, which will be directed by a local steering com- mittee in the weeks and months ahead. e Maine Community Looking for a bank you can trust to be here now and in the future?
