B R I E F Renys will open a Bangor store in '24 B y R e n e e C o r d e s R enys will add to its Maine adventure with an 18th retail store set to open in Bangor this spring, and the Newcastle-based chain is looking for other expan- sion opportunities. The company, known for its "Maine adventure" crowd- sourced jingles, announced the store plans on Nov. 17. With roots going back to 1949, when Robert H. Reny opened his first department store in Damariscotta, the family-owned business has 17 locations in the Pine Tree State from Wells to Madison. Adam Reny, the company's vice president, told Mainebiz through a spokesperson that Renys will work with Scarborough-based Flynn-Z as general con- tractor for the project. Subcontractors will come from the Bangor area. Hiring will start in the new year and could potentially produce around 40 jobs, according to Reny. "We have had many requests throughout the last 10 years to come to Bangor," he said. Renovation plans In Bangor, Renys will occupy space near the Bangor Mall, at 46 Springer Drive, previously occupied by the Christmas Tree Shops. The Middleborough, Mass.- based bargain retailer filed for bankruptcy in May, prompting the closure of its three Maine locations, in Scarborough, Augusta and Bangor. Before moving to the Bangor storefront, Renys plans to renovate the 31,000 square-foot space, starting early next year. As for future growth, Adam Reny said, "We are looking at future expansion, Some larger population centers like Bangor as well as smaller stores in more rural areas in the long term." Renys opened a store in Windham in 2016, expanded its Ellsworth store in September 2022 and relocated within Pittsfield this past July. The third-generation family business employs around 500 people. "With this new location, we look forward to provid- ing new job opportunities for residents in the Bangor area and a new 'Maine Adventure' for shoppers in central Maine," the company said.
