The university offers undergraduate majors in business administration, sport and recreation management, sustainability and business and marine entrepreneur- ship. The College of Business will strengthen relationships between UNE's estab- lished business programs with other programs and colleges across the university. "For years, UNE's business programs have engaged students in experiential learning opportunities and prepared them for rewarding, enriching careers and leadership positions with some of Maine's and the nation's most important employers, from private entities, nonprofit organizations, professional sports organizations, manufacturers, and more," said James Herbert, UNE's president. "Formation of a College of Business will allow UNE to build upon these successes and leverage new and existing partnerships to cement the univer- sity's status as a leader in the fields of business and entrepreneurship." The program will allow the creation of a range of credentials and various programs in different areas of business. It will also strengthen relation- ships between the business programs and the P.D. Merrill Makerspace and Office of Innovation. The new School of Education, formerly known as the Department of Education, will allow for more opportunities to build con- nections between the undergraduate education programs within the College of Arts and Sciences and the university's graduate education programs within the College of Professional Studies. "This exciting development is happening at a pivotal time in UNE's history as we continue to make headway on the transformation of our Portland Campus and reimagination of our space in Biddeford," said Gwen Mahon, UNE's provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. "This is truly an exhilarating time for UNE as we strive to educate the next generation of education professionals and business leaders for Maine. John Austin, who has served as the P.D. Merrill endowed chair of the busi- ness department, will serve as the interim dean. The university plans to conduct a national search this later summer for an inaugural dean. Two new business faculty members will join in the fall. UNE is the state's only medical college, Maine's only dental college, and offers a variety of other health care degree programs. The university has more than 6,500 students, including 2,300 on-campus undergraduates, 1,600 on- campus graduate students and 2,600 online students. UNE was ranked No. 6 among Maine's largest colleges and universities in the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists, based on full-time undergraduate enrollment as of fall 2022.
