Maine State Credit Union in Augusta said that its 18th Annual Maine State Credit Union FeedME 5k raised $60,000 to help 30 local organiza- tions provide food assistance to local Mainers in need. The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development ap- proved a newly designated 30-year downtown Tax Increment Finance dis- trict within the town of Oakland. The new district, totaling 37 acres, will al- low the municipality to stimulate invest- ment, encourage business expansion and retention, attract new businesses, and boost beautification initiatives. Acadia NP looks to expand housing As part of its quest to develop afford- able housing for year-round and seasonal employees, Acadia National Park said it received federal funding to begin the design of a development that could have up to 60 beds. Park officials told the Acadia National Park Advisory Commission that the park will discuss the project with the Bar Harbor Town Council. e park is eyeing a 3-acre parcel owned by the park on Harden Farm Road about a mile from Bar Harbor's downtown and near an access point to Acadia. e parcel abuts a golf course and a cemetery. e location has two, four- apartment buildings for employees that date back to the 1960s. Since that time, the park has eyed the parcel for further employee housing. Acadia expects to hire a consultant to start the design work next year for a build-out that could accommodate 50 to 60 beds. A credit union branch opens in Rockland Augusta-based Maine State Credit Union has opened a branch in Rockland, its first on the midcoast, in a former Tim Horton's coffee shop. e branch, located at 168 Camden St., is a full-service location staffed by six employees. It is the credit union's fifth branch location. e others are in Augusta, Waterville and Gray. A spokeswoman told Mainebiz the credit union plans to open another midcoast branch sometime in 2024. Maine State Credit Union is the third-largest Maine-based credit union, behind Atlantic Federal Credit Union and Maine Savings Federal Credit Union, as ranked in the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists. James Beard Award for Monson restaurant Portland may have a new rival for Maine's foodie capital after the Quarry restaurant in the Piscataquis County town of Monson, popula- tion 663, received a 2023 James Beard Award. e award for "Outstanding Hospitality Presented by American Airlines" is given to a restaurant, bar, or other food or drinking establish- ment that fosters a sense of hospital- ity among its customers and staff.
