daily impact on
our community,
and at times that
can be demanding,
but I think what
sets us apart is we
really take care of
and take care of
the whole person,
the whole caregiv-
er," said Kaitlyn
Urlaub, senior
director of talent
acquisition at UMass Memorial Health.
Urlaub said the system particularly
embraced flexible work arrangements in
light of the coronavirus pandemic. The
network offers jobs coming in anything
from four-hour-long shifts to eight- or
10-hour days. Clinically, variety is avail-
able, with an emphasis on physician and
nurse wellness to prevent burnout.
As far as compensation, Urlaub and
Precourt both underscore, while salaries
come in a wide range depending on
seniority and functional area, UMass
offers a robust benefits package, including
significant time off and a pension plan.
At smaller, nonprofit healthcare com-
panies like the Kennedy Community
Health Center, administration strives to
keep compensation robust, although non-
profits generally
pay less than their
larger or private
competitors. That
said, the Kennedy
center has
increased its sala-
ries, on average,
15% from 2020 to
2021, said Paula
Green, vice presi-
dent for advance-
ment, with more increases planned for
2022.
Both UMass and the Kennedy center
describe themselves as places where indi-
viduals can grow in their careers, with
plenty of opportunities for promotions
and advancement, including for those
who advance their education while work-
ing jobs requiring less credentials along
the way.
Although health care encompasses a
multitude of job opportunities, its variety
makes it a place where prospective work-
ers can often find a function and struc-
ture that works for them. Plus, it's certain-
ly not going anywhere anytime soon. n
