In the first three months of 2022 (the most recent data), new construction approved in Maine totaled $358.4 mil- lion, up from $289.4 million a year earlier, according to U.S. Census data. In the six New England states, $2.35 billion has been invested in new hous- ing through March, up from $1.956 billion a year earlier. Building permits issued increased by 28% Through the first three months of 2022, Maine issued 1,697 building permits (compared to 1,215 in the same three months a year ago), including 888 for single-family homes (vs. 979), according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The balance was for multifamily homes. Through March, permits were issued for 27 structures with five units or more (vs. 12 a year ago) — a total of 744 units (vs. 152). In the same period, Massachusetts issued 5,050 building permits (vs.3,796 a year ago) , including 1,660 for single-family homes (vs. 1,655). It gave the green light to 168 structures with five units or more (vs. 160), adding 3,148 units to the housing stock (vs. 1987). New England-wide, 9,410 building permits were issued (vs. 7,741 a year ago), including 4,391 for single family homes (vs. 4,571). In the six states, 251 structures with five units or more were approved (vs. 234), which will add 4,542 units (vs. 2,830). New construction in Maine approved in the first quarter totaled $358.4 million, a 19% gain.
