In 1934 he created the first in vitro rabbit baby in which the ovum was removed from the mother rabbit and placed in a saline-estrone solution mixture before returning it back to the mother rabbit. It attracted negative press and Harvard denied Pincus tenure and re-appointment. But colleague Hudson Hoagland helped him secure a visiting professor of zoology appointment at Clark University's biology department. e pair established the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology. Pincus also worked as the lab's janitor to save on expenses and support his wife and two children. Foundation colleague Min Chueh Chang earned his Ph.D. in 1941 at the University of Cambridge. His animal breeding specialty included studies on how sperm in animals is impacted by cooling and various hormonal treatments. Pincus granted him a fellowship to learn the technique of in vitro fertilization. In 1953, they confirmed earlier research showing that repeated injections of progesterone stopped ovulation in animals. In 1953, human trials of Dr. John Rock's infertility patients were conducted in Puerto Rico, using progesterone and then three different progestins in 1954. Pushback ensued that the pill Enovid was effective but had too many side effects. Rock and Pincus prevailed, showing placebos caused similar side effects. Further trials were held in Haiti, Mexico and Los Angeles. In May 1960, the Food & Drug Administration extended Enovid's indications to include contraception. Today, more than 100 million women worldwide and 12 million women in the United States are using oral contraceptives. – Susan M. Gonsalves Worcester inventions The increasing specificity of manufacturing and technological patents in Worcester's third century are apparent in this list. Also, the names/origins of the inventors are now from the global community, compared to those of the previous century.
