Dr. KRISTIN MATTOCKS has been appointed to the new position at UMass Medical School of associate dean for veterans affairs, an appoint- ment that comes as the Worcester medical school partners with Veterans Affairs on a new VA outpa- tient clinic due to open in 2021 next to the medical school campus. Mattocks's re- search specializes in improving healthcare for veterans, and she has taught at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., UMass Amherst, the University of Connecticut and Smith College in Northampton, Mass. She earned her master's degree in public health and Ph.D. in health policy and administration at Yale. EMILY GOWDEY-BACKUS of Worcester is the new marketing and communications manager at the Greater Worcester Com- munity Foundation, leading the nonprofit's internal and external communications including managing media relations and new initiatives. Gowdey-Backus previously served as the director of communications at the business advocacy organization Worcester Regional Chamber of Com- merce, where she managed the Chamber Exchange newspaper, and hosted and produced a weekly podcast, among other duties. A graduate of Leadership Worces- ter Class of 2020, Gowdey-Backus earned her master's degree in international jour- nalism from Cardiff University in Wales. Dr. CHRISTINE MATHAI has joined Reliant Medical Group's endocrinol- ogy department and Dr. SEAN MARON- EY has joined Reli- ant's special surgery department. Mathai received her medical degree at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, completed her residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and fellowship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. She is welcoming patients at Reliant's offices at 5 Neponset St. in Worcester. Maroney, who specializes in colon and rectal surgery, received his medical degree at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, N.Y. He then completed his internship at Naval Medical Center Ports- mouth in Virginia, and served as active duty military for five years with the U.S. Navy. He then completed his residency at Loma Linda University Hospital in Califor- nia, and a fellowship at Ohio State Univer- sity Wexner Medical Center in Columbus.
