A powerful connection Recent policy changes in the Northeast make the complete decarbonization of the electricity sector a priority. This has created a higher demand for clean energy, which in turn has led to a steady increase in the number of wind and solar generating facilities connected to the power grid. Maine has set its own ambitious goals, such as transitioning to 100% renewable electricity by 2050. To help Maine in its efforts, Hydro-Québec and its partner will provide the state with $258 million and invest an additional $200 million to upgrade Maine's existing power grid. On top of this significant infrastructure upgrade, the project will create 1,600 well-paid construction jobs in the region. Less pollution. More solutions. The negative effects of climate change are becoming more apparent every day. That's why finding solutions that counter the impacts of burning fossil fuels is more important than ever before. The Clean Energy Corridor will provide clean, renewable hydropower to replace energy derived from oil and gas. This will reduce New England's yearly carbon emissions by three million tons. That's the equivalent of removing 700,000 vehicles from the road—every year. The need for impactful climate action and economic stimulus has never been more pressing. The Clean Energy Corridor comes with investments that will upgrade New England's power grid, which will help Maine use more renewables such as wind and solar. The project will support Maine's economy and provide the region with Québec hydropower—a constant, reliable, low-carbon energy source. Together, hydropower, wind and solar can replace oil and gas and help keep the air and water in Maine cleaner for many generations to come.
