The Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth said its Cumberland County Committee awarded a total of $101,802 in grants to 16 nonprofits to support projects and nonprofits that strengthen commu- nities in the county. Katahdin monument gets 'sanctuary' status Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, an 87,500- acre tract on the eastern border of Baxter State Park, has been des- ignated as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary — one of only a dozen in the world, and the only sanctuary in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River. e designa- tion, announced in a news release, identifies spots where the night sky appears unusually dark, and allows views of celestial bodies with- out the interference of artificial light. Designated sanctuaries are remote areas that offer some of the world's darkest skies, accord- ing to the International Dark Sky Association. Katahdin Woods and Waters is the first certified space of any kind in New England.
