Winstanley Enterprises, which acquired the nearly 2 million-square- foot warehouse last year for $70 million, received approval to add 26 loading docks to the distribution hub at 1339 Tolland Turnpike. In total, Winstanley will invest $45 million to upgrade the distribution center as it expects to sign a multi-year lease with an unnamed tenant that plans to occupy at least 1 million square feet of space vacated by J.C. Penney. Dari Farms to close Tolland, Milford distribution centers Tolland's Dari Farms Ice Cream Distributors has informed state labor officials it will close a distribution center in town and another in Milford, leading to 97 layoffs. The company, operating as DF Opco LLC, started a series of layoffs Oct. 2, for workers based at 55 Gerber Dr. in Tolland and 268 H Quarry Road in Milford, the company said in a WARN notice filed with the state Department of Labor (DOL). The two distribution centers will be closed on or about Oct. 18. Dari Farms, which provides direct store delivery of dairy products to more than 5,000 retail outlets in New England, was acquired last year by Los Angeles-based private equity firm Diversis Capital LLC. Hamden biotech buys Hungarian pharmaceutical plant Hamden-based Vanessa Research Inc. (VRI) has acquired a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Hungary, where it established the first clinical trial for its flagship drug. VRI announced it purchased Hungaro- Gal for an undisclosed amount. VRI, which also has a satellite lab at UConn's technology incubation facility in Farmington and an existing presence in Europe, said it will work to grow Hungaro-Gal's contract manufacturing services and customer base. VRI also said it will use the Hungarian company's facilities to produce its flagship drug, Shylicine, which is the first-ever drug developed to treat the rare and lethal microvillus inclusion disease, also known as Davidson's Disease. New tool IDs healthcare cost disparities The Office of Health Strategy (OHS) has unveiled a new healthcare cost tool on its website that is intended to better inform patients about where they might find lower-cost healthcare procedures and services. A quick spin through the new cost tool reveals major differences between what Connecticut hospitals and provider groups charged between mid-2018 and mid-2019 for the same types of services.
