Jimmy Patel has filed an application with the town to erect the four-story, 108-room extended-stay hotel at 777 Day Hill Road. The hotel would span over 65,000 square feet, Patel said. Mark Greenberg, a prominent landlord in the area, owns the 18-acre site and the abutting land that is home to the Northeast's largest fastpitch softball facility. Greenberg said he will lease the land to Patel, who will own and operate the Holiday Inn hotel. Middletown plans to pursue state brownfield grants to remediate the old pumping station site. After that, the city will issue a development request for proposals, possibly by next summer, Samolis said. Meanwhile, the state is in the planning stages of a project that would redesign a key, heavily traf- ficked Route 9 intersection that splits the riverfront from down- town Middletown. Samolis hopes the project can help spur the construction of a new pedestrian bridge across the high- way and improvements to nearby Union Street, spurring better public access to the riverfront. >> Town Profile continued LATEST HEADLINES HARTFORDBUSINESS.COM POLL Middletown General Land area (sq. miles) 41 Median age 36 Population (2020) 49,855 Median household income $63,828 Unemployment rate 5.1% Major Employers • Middlesex Hospital • Connecticut Valley Hospital • Whiting Forensic Institute • State Police • Wesleyan University Housing stock Median price $228,500 Median rent $1,062 Government Total revenue (2016) $155,794,000 Per capita tax $2,465 Mill rate 36 Grand list $3,458,455,940 Economy Top employment industries Units Jobs Health care and social assistance 167 6,270 Government 52 4,968 Manufacturing 61 4,038 Top taxpayers (2015) Eversource $128,506,430 Aetna $124,435,730 Kleen Energy Systems $65,397,630 Source: Connecticut Economic Resource Center Middletown's riverfront could add a public park with a stage or public dock.
