Engineering A team approach for equal opportunities C olby Co. was created in 2008 by Calen and Sarah Emily Colby to be a one-stop shop for mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, struc- tural and civil engineering and architec- ture. With 43 employees and hundreds of projects, this is a talented group of design professionals who build upon each other's expertise in a team-oriented environment. The team approach is designed to provide equal opportuni- ties for mentoring, experience on a variety of projects, professional de- velopment, project management and f u n . T h e r e a r e many different types of fun opportuni- ties outside of work. Annual gatherings include a Holiday Party, Children's Party, Summer Outing, Bowling and Picnics. These events help build the culture and strengthen relationships in the office as well as provide places to unwind. Colby Co. also provides annual Maine State Park Passes that provide free entry to the state parks for employees and their families and a weekend away at Maine Huts & Trails. Each employee is given two paid volunteer days per year, flex- ible hours and summer hours. Company outings include places and events such as the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, Sea Dogs, Bayside Bowl, Fort Williams, Salt Pump Climbing Gym, Children's Museum, Casino Night, Peaks Island and a Trek Across Maine team. Paid benefits include free parking, paid health and dental care, paid short- and long-term dis- ability insurance, paid parental leave, cell phone stipend and paid professional development. Colby Co.'s anniversary bonus program gives employees $5,000 at their five-year anniversary, $10,000 at their 10-year anniversary, $15,000 at their 15-year anniversary and $20,000 at their 20-year anniversary. Additionally, the company offers an annual bonus that ranges from 3% to 10% of an employee's annual salary. The firm makes deposits ranging from $250 to $2,000 to each employee's Health Savings Account and offers a 4% match to each employee's con- tributions to the 401(k) plan. Employees can take advantage of a free, six-week Healthy Lifestyle Workshop Series fo- cusing on daily practices for relaxation and mindfulness, led by a certified corpo- rate wellness coach. Additionally, there is a free six-week Stretch, Breath & Meditation Series designed to address the issues such as neck stiffness, back pain, fatigue and waning focus.
