N O T E W O R T H Y C E N T R A L & W E S T E R N The University of Maine at Augusta received a $169,287 grant award in support of its Academic Programs of the Future initiative from the Davis Educational Foundation, established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after Mr. Davis's retirement as chairman of Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. The Maine Arts Commission in Augusta awarded $366,810 in grants to 156 artists, nonprofit arts organiza- tions and arts educators throughout the state for its fiscal 2019 year. Androscoggin Bank in Lewiston said its MainStreet Foundation awarded a total of $12,500 to eight area nonprofits that support at-risk youth programming. Norway Savings Bank announced it pro- vided Avesta Housing with a $20,000 donation to renovate the former Mildred M. Fox School in Paris. The former ele- mentary school will be transformed into senior affordable housing featuring 12 studio and one-bedroom apartments. Ellsworth American sold to owner of Press Herald Reade Brower of Rockland plans to add the Ellsworth American and its sister paper, the Mount Desert Islander, to his portfolio of Maine newspapers. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Seller Alan Baker, 89, owned the Ellsworth American and Islander for 32 years. Brower is owner of six of the state's seven daily newspapers (all but the Bangor Daily News) and 19 Maine weeklies. In March, he announced the acquisi- tion of two Maine dailies from Sample News Group — e Times Record in Brunswick and Journal Tribune in Biddeford — as well as the Mainely Media weekly publications. Under the corporate name of RFB Enterprises, Brower bought the Sun Media Group in July 2017, picking up the Lewiston Sun Journal and several weekly news- papers and magazines in the acquisi- tion.
