HEALTH • Summer 2018 13 F or those with skin ailments like psoriasis and vitiligo, treatment is now much quicker and easier than it once was. UMass Memorial Health Care now uses an ultraviolet light from a machine called the Pharos EX-308 Excimer, which uses a precise wavelength that better treats affected skin. "It's a pretty exciting laser system," said Dr. Gary Scharf (left), who works in dermatology at UMass' Hahnemann Campus, where the new laser is located. Before the Excimer, Scharf said, treating psoriasis or vitiligo wasn't as cost-effective or as ideal for treating small areas. But the Excimer treats using a small aperture that better fits for treating smaller areas. The laser treatment also takes less time than it used to, Scharf said. For psoriasis, for example, treatment might take 25-30 sessions. Now, it may be 15-20 sessions.
