be fair to call WBJ the
Worcester Brewery Journal.
Two weeks aer featuring
local beers on the cover of our annual
Book of Lists special edition, Staff Writer
Zachary Comeau has created another
beer-centric cover in his feature story
(see Page 8) on new developments in the
brewery industry. Brewers are no longer
taking market share from the Budweisers
and Coors of the world at the rate they
once were, and old and new cra brew-
ers alike are shiing their focus – and
adjusting their growth expectations – to
cater to a growing local market. It's a very
compelling story about a young industry
still finding its way.
Full disclosure here, I'm a big fan of beer.
I have at least a half dozen different cra
brews in my fridge at home right now. But
judging by the amount of attention our
beer-related articles get, you love reading
about them. Four of the top 10 most read
articles on WBJournal.com this year are
related to the food and beverage industry.
Last year, the three most-read stories on
our website were about breweries in East
Brookfield, Northbridge and Charlton.
I find the cra brewing industry
endlessly fascinating. e domestic beer
market was dominated by a handful of
large players for so long, the emergence of
so many small, local players – focusing on
quality over quantity – is very refreshing.
ese new brewers are taking their passion
for beer and mixing in some business
know how to create sustainable compa-
nies, both big and small.
All our brewery stories are naturally
in our wheelhouse of business-to-busi-
ness news, focusing on the manufac-
turing aspects, adapting to changes
in the market, and standing out in an
increasingly crowded field. Yet, beer
stories are inherently consumer-facing as
well: People like to drink beer and read
about new nearby brewpubs and tasting
rooms where they can relax with a frosty
beverage.
So, while we will continue to offer
compelling and insightful regional
journalism in the more traditional busi-

ness-to-business fields – we are planning
an in-depth economic development
feature for the June 25 issue – you can
rest assured you can keep reading about
Central Massachusetts beer here.
