Accounting firm merger "Combining with Marcum will give our clients access to the resources and expertise of a national firm while ensuring that they continue to be served by the same professionals they have always worked with." CPA Thomas J. Filomeno on West Hartford-based Filomeno & Company P.C.'s decision to be acquired by New York accounting firm Marcum, which has been growing its Connecticut presence. Gena Glickman | President, Manchester Community College By John Stearns jstearns@HartfordBusiness.com Manchester Community College (MCC) Presi- dent Gena Glickman is retiring from her role on July 1, but doesn't plan to leave education; she was recommended by the board of trustees for Mas- sasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass., to be that school's president. The Mas- sachusetts Board of Higher Education is expected to vote on approving her June 19. "It's always bittersweet to hand over the reins of leadership, but I know that MCC is in a good position thanks to the talent and dedication of our faculty, staff and community partners," said Glickman, 66. "The opportunity at Massasoit is good for me personally and also will allow me to continue to make a contribu- tion to community colleges, which I believe are a national treasure of higher education." As she prepares to depart MCC after 10 years there, Glickman preferred not to comment when asked what she thought of a Connecticut State Colleges and Universities proposal to consolidate the state's 12 community colleges, a plan later rejected by a regional accrediting body. What are you most proud of accomplishing at MCC during your time as president? We've developed a significant number of new programs and enhanced student services, and our business, university and community partnerships. I'm also proud of the significant growth of our MCC Foundation resources. Students have access to a rigorous liberal arts and science education alongside programs that lead directly to em- ployment with a certificate or associate degree. Students graduate or transfer from MCC with little to no debt. Graduation rates have improved, as well as other metrics of student success. In addition, our long-term facilities master planning will continue to move forward, en- abling us to better serve students. What's the biggest change you've noticed in higher education during your career? Higher education has obviously become more costly — while at the same time more vital than ever to long-term success, not just in terms of employment but also in terms of people becom- ing more informed citizens, better neighbors and more active members of the community. What's one thing people don't know about you? I take ballroom dance lessons and competed in a competition that supported the Manchester community.
