B I Z 21 M AY 2 8 , 2 0 1 8 W hen Guy Langevin heard his primary-care doctor was mov- ing away, he used the Grand Rounds mobile app to fi nd a new one. e Dead River Co. vice president and chief administrative offi cer had helped bring Grand Rounds, a San Francisco-based digital health start- up, to the Lewiston-Auburn area in 201 in his role as chairman of Maine & Co., a consultancy that promotes doing business here. Dead River was also the fi rst Maine- based employer to sign up with Grand Rounds, which helps companies trim health care costs and boost productiv- ity by connecting their employees and family members with the doctors best equipped for their needs. Langevin typed his search query into the app, which came back with a recommendation with the how and why behind the choice, and asked whether he wanted an appointment. He did, and had one confi rmed within a day: "It was very quick." Welcome to the convergence of digital technology and health care, an emerging fi eld to make medicine more personalized, precise and effi cient. Grand Rounds aims to stand out from rivals such as Best Doctors, PinnacleCare and Accolade by using its proprietary Quality Algorithm to select the highest-quality physicians for in-offi ce visits or to give second opinions on a treatment or diagnosis. Grand Rounds has used its technol- ogy to vet more than % of all active specialists and primary-care providers in the United States. Out of a small subset of doctors with top marks in each specialty, it handpicks the best qualifi ed for each patient. It also collects and digi- tizes medical records, manages appoint- ments, and employs doctors and nurses to answer patients' questions, review fi les, and assist with quality assurance.
