City Council members voted unan- imously to support a citizen petition for the city to ask Hanover to delay the demolition for three months. e motion, which is nonbinding, followed residents and activists hoping to see the 89-year-old structure preserved. e activist group, Save Notre Dame Alliance, put forth the request as new information and ideas have come to light, including the proposal to build a commercial building on the same land to increase the property's value and help fund a potential rehabilitation. e alliance, citing a recent meet- ing with U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, city officials and Hanover, said a subsidy of about $6 million would be needed to make redevelopment financially viable. WPI touts record-high number of patents Worcester Polytechnic Institute has set its own new record for patents in the past year, with 16. Patents have also been filed for potential approval by 42 students this year, another all-time high. WPI's patents have jumped from only one in 1990 until getting up six in 2007. ere are now 53.
