Record season expected for Portland cruise ship traffic e first cruise ship of what's expected to be a record season arrived in Portland May 2. e Artania, with 1,200 passengers and 520 crew, berthed at the Portland Ocean Terminal before heading to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Portland expects 118 ship visits this year. In all, a record 170,000 passengers are expected, up from 145,000 in 2017. e ships will also carry a total crew of 66,600, up from 48,668 in 2017. e cruise ship season extends through early November. Casco Bay Lines lands $6M grant to replace aging ferry Casco Bay Island Transit District will receive $6 million to replace a ferry that has reached the end of its use- ful life. e grant was announced by U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, chairman of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee. Operating since 1981, CBITD provides year-round ferry service to six inhabited islands in Casco Bay. Berg said CBITD's five ferries transported 1.1 million passen- gers, 35,000 vehicles, and 5,300 tons of freight in 2017. "We move a lot back and forth from those islands," he said.
