Maritime Museum to relaunch historic fi shing schooner Maine Maritime Museum in Bath plans to celebrate the full restora- tion of the 1906 schooner Mary E, the oldest Bath-built vessel still sailing, by hosting a public recom- missioning ceremony as the vessel is launched into the Kennebec River on June 9. Built in Bath in 1906 and restored in 1965 on the grounds of what is now Maine Maritime Museum, Mary E is a two-masted clipper schooner and the oldest sur- viving Maine-built fi shing schooner. e museum purchased Mary E in early 2017. Last April, when Mary E arrived in Bath from its former home in New York, the museum announced its plans to complete the major restoration of the vessel that began in 2006 under its previ- ous owner's collaboration with the Long Island Maritime Museum. Soon after, a team of shipwrights, led by master shipwright Andros Kypragoras, began working year- round on the Mary E's restoration, replacing all its frames, replank- ing the hull above the waterline, reframing and planking the deck and replacing the engine. e museum is in the midst of a $2 mil- lion fundraising campaign to fund not only the acquisition and restora- tion, but also ongoing maintenance to assure Mary E continues sailing for many years. Q. What to do when confl ict shows its ugly face? ACE Advises: The problem isn't that confl ict is showing up, but that we may not know how to deal constructively with it when it does appear. Confl ict can mean people are thinking about your organization's problems or opportunities, and have found different visions of what might work. That can be an exciting opening to a lively visioning session. Or confl ict might mean personal disagreements that may have been eroding work relationships are fi nally coming out of the closet. What an opportunity that is to name them (probably in private), invite some sharing and healing, and all get back to work with energy, trust, and comfort. There's a game to teach confl ict management called Shift/POV, produced by Kym Dakin of Voice Into Learning. POV stands for Point of View, a card game using exercises in shifting our points of view to seek confl ict resolution. It's productive to contemplate this mandate — that we shift our point of view — even if we're playing the game, but especially if we're not. Consider this story: Susan, head of systems development, is always "tweaking" the customer ser- vice computer screens to make them more friendly, powerful and informative. Meanwhile, Gena, managing the customer service group, is frustrated with the fl ood of small changes that come unannounced, leaving so many of her employees challenged, trying to use a system that keeps changing. Once Susan and Gena share their points of view with an eye to fi nding a mutual solution, they are on the way to ending the confl ict.
