GREATER HARTFORD HEALTH • Spring 2018 www.HartfordBusiness.com • March 26, 2018 • Hartford Business Journal 13 { From The Editor } A focus on aging W elcome to the spring 2018 edition of Greater Hartford Health. In this issue, our two main stories focus on how Connecticut's aging population is forcing the healthcare industry to adapt. In our lead story on PG. 22, staff writer John Stearns details how healthcare providers are investing in new inpatient beds and physicians for geriatric psychiatry patients. Doctors say demand for geriatric psychiatry services is high and growing as the state's population ages, and that beds across the state are oen full. But addressing the need is more than just a matter of spending money. Healthcare providers are grappling with a psychiatrist shortage and low reimbursement rates. A graying population will also mean people need more care and assistance. Many individuals would prefer to receive that help from their families and in their homes. In our story on PG. 24, we detail how the roll-out of a newly allowed temporary housing structure called "granny pods" is off to a slow start in Connecticut. e small, portable garden cottages can be installed on a single-family home's property, giving older adults a chance at independent living while still being close to family. However, local governments are skittish about how the structures mesh with their zoning codes. Our Q&A on PG. 14 features Victoria Veltri, executive director of the newly created Office of Health Strategy. OHS has been tasked with many major projects, and needless to say, Veltri has a full plate. Our executive profile spotlights Paul Verrastro, CEO of Farmington's Center for Advanced Reproductive Services, which has helped thousands of women and couples facing infertility have babies. Verrastro is a runner, equestrian, theater buff and avid bowler who likes to meditate. Learn more about him and his organization on PG. 20. Be sure to check out our lists starting on PG. 16, detailing the area's adult daycare programs, assisted-living facilities and fitness clubs. anks for reading, – Matt Pilon, Greater Hartford Health Editor Matt Pilon, Greater Hartford Health Editor This issue The Region's Quarterly Health Care Magazine 22 Aging Support Hospitals add doctors, beds to meet growing demands for geriatric psychiatry 24 Senior Living Billed as a cheaper senior-care option, "granny pods" see sluggish CT rollout 14 Q&A Q&A features Victoria "Vicki" Veltri, executive director of the state Office of Health Strategy 15 The Lists Adult day care centers; Fitness clubs; Largest assisted- living communities 22 Executive Profile Paul Verrastro, CEO of the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services AGILE LEADERSHIP: Staying Ahead of the Game Hosted by the UConn School of Business Presenting Sponsor: Keynote Speaker: APRIL 17 & 18 • MOHEGAN SUN, CT GENOLEADS.COM REGISTER NOW AT ROBIN ROBERTS Co-Anchor, "Good Morning America"
