Portland startup accelerator lands $475K grant Venture Hall, a Portland startup accelerator, is one of six recipi- ents nationwide to receive funding from the Ewing Marion Kauff man Foundation in a new initiative that's intended to remove policy barriers hampering new business creation. Jess Knox, president of Venture Hall, told Mainebiz that his orga- nization will receive $475,000 in a three-year grant that was awarded through a competitive invitation- only RFP process. Knox said the funding will be used to build on existing programs for Maine entre- preneurs and startups, with a par- ticular focus on public policy. Crescendo Consulting Group LLC in Portland was hired to conduct an 18-month Community Mental Health Needs Assessment to assist two Missouri counties, Springfi eld and Greene, in understanding how mental health and substance abuse affect over a quarter-million people in the region. Zildjian Cymbals moving jobs to its factory in Newport Avendis Zildjian Co. of Massachusetts has purchased the Illinois-based Mike Balter Mallet Co. and will move its production into the Newport factory of Vic Firth Co., another Zildjian-owned company. e Bangor Daily News reported the acquisition will create 14 jobs at Vic Firth's factory in Newport. Zildjian has been making cymbals since it was established in Constantinople in 1623. e company moved to Massachusetts in 1929. Vic Firth Co. started in 1963 as a wood-turning company that also made pepper mills and rolling pins. In 2010, it merged with the Avedis Zildjian Co., the world's leading cymbal manufacturer, which had a longstanding profes- sional relationship with Vic Firth. Belgrade conveyor business acquired PRC Industrial Supply has acquired ACE Conveyor Services of Belgrade, including assets and its three-person staff . Kevin Easler, vice president and general manager of Portland-based PRC said the deal, which is eff ec- tive immediately, came after several months of negotiation and "it was mutual respect that made this deal possible." ACE's three employees, including president and founder Tom Hudson, will operate out of the PRC Portland site, and ACE's Oakland Road location in Belgrade will be used for storage, Easler said. Hudson said that he built his company over 20 years. PRC Industrial Supply also has locations in Bangor and Burlington, Mass., and specializes in conveyor belt, industrial hose and fl uid power components sales and service. It was established in 1895 as Portland Rubber Co. It's a wholly owned subsidiary of Singer Equities and SBP Holdings, headquartered in Houston.
