Continued from Page 30 WPI freshman Sadie Dominguez, in the school's Salisbury Labs, discovered in high school that she wanted to study programming. She's one of five recipients of a new scholarship program to encourage women to study STEM subjects. WPI making strides on women in STEM I n the fall of 2016, Worcester Polytechnic Institute set a new high, with 33 percent of its incoming class female. The record didn't last long. In the fall of 2017, 44 percent were female. The initiative at WPI is an example of a growth of women in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – jobs nationally. A decade ago, WPI stopped requiring prospective students to submit SAT scores, feeling standard- ized tests can work against women and minorities. Applications from women rose 81 percent. Then the school took about $1 mil- lion each year was once used for merit appeals and directed it to scholarships for women to study STEM. This fall, for the first time, WPI gave $20,000 grants to five incoming women.
