The project involved hiring hundreds of new information technol- ogy employees and contract staff, and teaching select clinical staff, like Palmgren, how to use the software so they, in turn, can help train their peers. Leading the charge on this $650-million project, which included upgrades to information-technology infrastructure across the system as well as the purchase and implementa- tion of Epic, is Tim Tarnowski, the chief information officer for UMass Memorial. A seasoned IT executive, Tarnowski took the job at UMass Memorial in November 2014, know- ing a revamp of the organization's IT system lay ahead. "I just love these types of challenges," Tarnowski said in an interview about three weeks before Epic went live. Tarnowski has held several roles as head of IT for hospital systems in the Midwest and in California, and he's led major IT transitions before. Each time, they've grown in scale. "Some people think this kind of stuff is fun, and I happen to be one of them," Tarnowski said. That doesn't mean it's easy. To orchestrate an IT change of this scale, UMass Memorial made a number of big moves, including building a new IT office on Front Street in Worcester, hir- ing nearly 400 new staff members to the information systems department, and as many as 300 contract workers. After signing with Epic, the system spent months customizing the platform with feedback from 1,400 clinicians across UMass Memorial. Then the soft- ware testing began, a nine-month pro- cess running from September 2016 to June. Then training began and contin- ued until the Oct. 1 launch. After Harrington stabbing, nurses call for greater protections A fter a nurse was attacked in June while on the job at at Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, the state nurs- ing association called for more aggres- sive safety measures to protect workers at hospitals statewide. At 10:17 a.m. Wednesday, a Harrington nurse was attacked by a patient after he cornered her in the hospital's triage area and stabbed her. The nurse, Elise Wilson, was immedi- ately cared for at Harrington and then transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. More than 70 percent of hospital emergency room nurses are assaulted at some point during their career, according to the Massachusetts Nurses Association. Nurses are assaulted on the job more often than police officers and prison guards. The suspect in the Harrington stab- bing, 24-year-old Conor O'Regan of Southbridge, immediately fled the hos- pital following the incident and was apprehended by Southbridge police. The hospital was put on lockdown following the incident. The legislature is considering a bill to require healthcare employers to perform an annual safety risk assessment and, based on those findings, develop and implement programs that minimize the danger of workplace violence to employ- ees and patients. The bill would also give assaulted healthcare workers time off to address legal issues and require semian- nual reporting of assaults on employees. Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early, a strong supporter of nurs- es, has worked with the MNA to pro- mote the legislation, according to the association.
