Vice President Jeff Karam wanted to build the Homewood Suites on Washington Square for its potential to tie into adjacent Worcester neighborhoods. sprawling indoor sports entertainment facility, an office building and an array of restaurants. Worcester Crossing, anchored by a Walmart and Sam's Club, opened in 2010, followed the next year by Northborough Crossing, a nearly 600,000-square-foot plaza anchored by a Wegmans, Kohl's and BJ's Wholesale Club. Worcester hotel mini-boom moves downtown W hen the Hilton Garden Inn brought hotel rooms to a former fire station site in downtown Worcester, it finally brought beds close to events at the DCU Center. More recently, a Hampton Inn and a Courtyard opened at Gateway Park north of downtown. In May, a 118-room Homewood Suites opened just off the Washington Square rotary across from Union Station. In March, an AC Hotel will open on Front Street, on part of the former Galleria mall site. The Homewood Suites developer, Fall River-based First Bristol Corp., said it was attracted to the site because of its location between downtown and Shrewsbury Street. The developer purposely left a res- taurant out of the design, figuring guests would want to head out to grab a bite to eat instead. The 170-room AC Hotel is likely to add to the neighborhood in a slightly different way. The develop- ment will include a 110 Grill restaurant, which will become the Westford eatery's 14th location. The AC Hotel will add feet on the street, as devel- opers and planners say, at about the same time as the adjacent 145 Front at City Square opens with the first of an eventual 365 apartment units. A restaurant is slated for the ground floor of the 145 Front project, and other restaurant spaces are available for lease on the other side of Front Street in Mercantile Center. A $30-million development at the site called the Residences at Salem Square, with 84 apartments and 2,025 square feet of retail, has also been approved immediately behind the AC Hotel on the site of the vacant Notre Dame des Canadiens church.
