Health Care Heroes on front lines of serving the community I t's been another year where health care has dominated the headlines. Whether it's the debate over the future of the Affordable Care Act or statewide public policy discussions over hospital taxes and insurance contracts, the healthcare industry has remained a constant source of intrigue on the national and state levels. What often gets overlooked in all the coverage is the individuals and organiza- tions that work hard every day to care for the community. This week, Hartford Business Journal is honoring them as part of our annual Great- er Hartford Health Care Heroes awards. Our winners run the gamut from a researcher who is studying treatments for various diseases caused by skin bacteria and viruses, to a doctor who has helped im- prove the quality of care at a local hospital. We also spotlight two nurses part of a critical care transport team at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, who also volun- tarily travel around the country to provide aid to areas hit hard by natural disasters, including Puerto Rico, which was recently devastated by Hurricane Maria. Another winner leads the dedicated volunteer staff at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center. Our judges — Angela Mattie (Quinnpiac University), John O'Connell Jr. (C.M. Smith Agency Inc.) and Patricia Baker (Communi- ty Health Foundation) — played a key role identifying our Health Care Heroes. Using standard criteria they voted on nominees in seven different categories ranging from nurses, physicians, and volunteers to industry leaders and organizations that made advancements in healthcare preven- tion and innovation. The judges were particularly adept at finding innovative organizations like the Community Health Center, which pro- vides medical as well as dental services to 100,000 people a year at 14 primary and 200 secondary locations scattered throughout the state. Collectively, they are an impressive class of Health Care Heroes. We recently hon- ored them during a Dec. 7 luncheon at the Hartford Marriott. Our heroes were nominated by those who know their work the best — co- workers, clients, etc. They share a common passion for the services they provide and for the life-changing impacts they have on the lives of others. We hope you join us in congratulating them.
