B I Z 13 N OV E M B E R 2 7 , 2 0 1 7 Rebirth planned for Hancock tannery site e Downeast town of Hancock has applied for two grants, total- ing $480,000, to transform a dilapi- dated tannery for commercial and residential use. e Ellsworth American reported the town has owned the former Hancock Ellsworth Tannery since the previous owner, TT Corp. LLC of Hermon, failed to pay back taxes in 2015. Most of the grant money would come from the federal brownfi elds grant pro- gram. Rich Campbell, who runs the Falmouth-based Campbell Environmental Group, told the paper the project envisions a revitalized area in Hancock with small businesses and aff ordable housing. Frenchman Bay Conservancy has committed to building a parking lot. "It's in a good area of Hancock and if we get it cleaned up, then we can do something with it," Hancock Selectman Rick Merchant told the newspaper. Boothbay digs in heels on Botanical Gardens expansion e Boothbay Board of Appeals rescinded the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens' permit for a $30 million expansion that has already begun. e Bangor Daily News reported the board favored an appeal by abutters, who said the plans would further degrade the water quality of nearby Knickerbocker Lake, which is part of the pub- lic water supply for the Boothbay region. e board's 3-2 decision came months after construction started on the CMBG's multi-year expansion, which includes a new visitor center and gift shop, a res- taurant in the existing visitor center, a 16,000-square-foot horticulture research and production facil- ity, a nearly six-story conservatory, expanded parking, formal gardens and trails. e attraction had 190,000 visitors last year.
